One thing it’ll have in common with the present is we’ll still call it the present

While I am an optimist in the specific, in terms of “the future” more generally, I am decidedly pessimist. Most times I am rather grandiosely pessimistic, in fact. I imagine the relatively near (well within my lifetime) future either as a world of boring attentionless hedonistic cyborgs à la Wall-E, as torn apart by wars over resource scarcity and environmental calamities, or as destroyed in a nuclear holocaust. My only consolation is that any one individual is unlikely to be experiencing all three scenarios at the same time.

But lately I’ve been wondering whether or not a more reasonable prediction is that the future will be very much like the present, only gradually worse in just about every way.
