Alex Semin: Asian Sensation

With Jeremy Lin happening in the world of basketball (although to someone from Richmond High the revelation that Asians could be good at basketball is not particularly surprising, to be honest), I was thinking about Asian stars in the NHL. There is Devin Setoguchi (who had a hilarious shootout attempt the other day). There is Richard Park. But then I decided that the best indisputably Asian player in the NHL is Alex Semin (or Syomin, as his name would be spelled if the transliteration was done reasonably), born in Krasnoyarsk. Then there’s Evgeni Nabokov, from Ust’ Kamenogorsk. In fact, Pavel Datsyuk (Ekaterinburg, or Yo-burg “as the kids call it”) and Geno Malkin (Magnitogorsk) could plausibly be claimed to be born in Asia as well. I don’t mean to claim Syomin and friends should be championed by Asian-Americans. Nor do I demand a redefinition of Asian or something. I’m just being a fucking pedant. And affirming that while many names for races are stupid, continent-based names for races are also stupid.

Tell me about it. The other day i was telling someone that i was so proud of lin because we’re both Asian when someone said i was indian, not asian. Which fucking continent is india in asshole?

This is like two opposite faces of the same point I think

What do you mean? Are you implying that, in my anecdote, i’m deliberately ignoring the obvious self-serving logic with mental gymnastics in order to talk out of both sides of my ass?

Who me? I would never do that.
